Inspiration | ADOBE MAX

My friend and colleague, Jenna Simmons and I attended ADOBE MAX 2016 in San Diego, CA. Neither of us had been before, and it was everything we expected and more. I mean, not only was it a fun girls' trip to San Diego, but we were surrounded by 10,000 other creative professionals, heard from some of the best in our industry, learned more about the tools we use and future technologies, and were surrounded by art and creativity the entire time. Oh, and we got to watch the World Series in a crowd of fellow designerds. Because a picture is worth a thousand words, we put together a hype video of the pics and vids we took. Enjoy!

My personal key takeaways:

  • Iterate. Don't be too precious. Learn how to integrate failure within your creative process. Establish checkpoints so that you can quietly fail with your team. Design and creativity is courageous.
  • Simplify. As visual collectors, it's easy to be distracted by shiny things and complicate. Be smart and ruthless, take an editing eye to your work, and distill it as much as possible. Audiences today are in a constant state of distraction, so you've got a millisecond to effectively communicate.
  • Entertain. No one is above some whimsical fun. Whether it's thoughtful art that you can lose yourself in, or whimsical ideas that offer a quick break from ordinary life, people want to be surprised and delighted.
  • Inspire. We designers are inspiration machines: we have a voracious appetite for all things cute, gorgeous, sexy, brilliant, funny, amazing. It's our fuel to turn around and create and inspire in turn. As an ACD at my company, it's all too easy to get tunnel vision with deadline after deadline — but my team looks to me for inspiration, so I must invest in them and myself. I must nurture the child within me that wanted to be an artist when she grew up. I must say YES to culture while editing out the noise. I must be generous with my creativity.

To thank our company for sending us to ADOBE MAX, Jenna & I gave a company-wide lunch & learn about our trip and the key takeaways.
